Knowledge Center - 2D LiDAR Scanner & 3D LiDAR Scanner Products
This artical is to explain the types of 2D lidar scanner & 3D LiDAR scanner products, as well as the different types of LiDAR, like mechnical, solid state and Hybrid solid-state lidar products. We will also introduce about how to select the right lidar scanner for your robotics, mapping or V2X projects.
How does LiDAR scanner works?
The working principle of lidar, including 2D lidar or 3D lidar scanner is very similar to that of radar. Using laser as the signal source, the pulsed laser emitted by the laser will cause scattering on trees, roads, bridges and buildings hitting the ground, and part of the light waves will be reflected to the lidar receiver. Above, calculated according to the principle of laser ranging, the distance from the lidar to the target point is obtained.
The pulse laser continuously scans the target object, and then the data of all the target points on the target object can be obtained. After imaging processing with this data, an accurate three-dimensional image can be obtained. It is also possible to measure two or more distances and calculate the rate of change to obtain the speed. This is and is also the basic working principle of direct detection lidar.
Lidar scanner system is composed of three parts: transmitting system, receiving system, and information processing. The working principle of lidar is to use visible and near-infrared light waves (mostly infrared light near the 950nm or 1550nm band) to emit, reflect and receive to detect objects. According to the structure, lidar is divided into mechanical lidar, solid-state lidar and hybrid solid-state lidar.

- Mechanical LiDAR Scanner
Mechanical lidar refers to the macroscopic rotation of its transmitting system and receiving system, that is, by continuously rotating the transmitting head, the laser with faster speed and more accurate transmission is changed from “line” to “surface”, and it is vertical. Arrange multiple laser beams in the straight direction to form multiple surfaces to achieve the purpose of dynamic scanning and dynamic receiving of information. Because it has a mechanical rotating mechanism, the biggest feature of the mechanical lidar is that it can rotate by itself and is relatively large.
Inside the mechanial lidar range, there are 2D lidar scanners (single-line lidar) and 3D lidar scanners (or multi-line lidar):
2D LiDAR Scanner Products
The 2D lidar scanner is actually a laser transmitter, plus a rotating scanner. The scanned image is a two-dimensional image. Please see the point cloud comparison between 2D LiDAR scanner and 3D LiDAR scanner.
Applications of 2D LiDAR Scanner
Home/Commercial Service Robot
As an indispensable and important sensor in service robots, lidar has good directivity and high focus compared with image and ultrasonic ranging, and is currently the most reliable and stable positioning technology. The lidar sensor obtains map information, constructs a map, and realizes path planning and navigation.
Security
In terms of security, lidar can be linked with multiple cameras to intelligently identify intruders, actively track and obtain accurate dynamic trajectories and on-site video in real time, so that security staff can take timely pursuit actions.
AGV
Lidar can guide the AGV to judge the best path, easily avoid obstacles, and reach the destination smoothly. At the same time, there is no need to install additional reflectors. It has the advantages of high positioning accuracy, high path flexibility and high intelligence.
Drone
At present, lidar has entered a practical stage in the obstacle avoidance of low-altitude flying helicopters, helping helicopters to conduct low-altitude patrol flights to avoid collisions with ground hills or buildings.
