LS LiDAR AGV and Robot Navigation & Anti-collision Applications
From magnetic stripe navigation, two-dimensional code navigation to laser navigation to visual navigation, every leap is based on the continuous improvement of core technologies. For laser navigation, the key sensor realized by its technology – lidar has been placed in a more important position and has become one of the core components of the AGV and robot navigation and obstacle avoidance.
Lidar is a radar system that emits laser beams to detect the position, velocity and other characteristic quantities of targets. Its working principle is to transmit a detection signal (laser beam) to the target, and then compare the received signal (target echo) reflected from the target with the transmitted signal, and after proper processing, the relevant information of the target can be obtained, such as target distance, bearing, altitude, speed, attitude, and even shape.
Different Types of LiDAR for AGV and Robot Applications
AGV Anti-collision or Obstacle Avoidence LiDAR
Obstacle avoidance lidar only needs to detect the surrounding obstacles, and the technical requirements are relatively low. The application of obstacle avoidance lidar is relatively early and has a wide range. At present, its technology is very mature. In general, traditional magnetically permeable AGVs are generally equipped with two lidars to avoid obstacles. Due to higher safety requirements, forklift AGVs are generally equipped with 3 obstacle avoidance lidars, two in the front and one in the back. The latest generation of autonomous navigation AGV or AMRs are basically equipped with 1-2 lidars, which are arranged diagonally. Due to the structure of the chassis body, the lidar is not suitable to be placed on the top of the car body, and the FOV of the lidar is generally 270, so most of them need to arrange two lidars front and rear or diagonally to achieve 360
LeiShen specifically developed W series Anti-collision lidar Scanner is mainly applied to performs collision avoidance and area detection for AGV, RGV, Robot, ect. There are 15 field sets to be chosen and finally output with signals of switching values and point cloud, and this feature allows the AGV to continuously scan multiple interested to detect potential obstacles.
W series lidar also comes with IP67 Ingress Protection, high shock and vibration resistance. This enables it to operate with no hassle under any industrial application environments.

AGV and Robot Navigation LiDAR
Compared with obstacle avoidance lidar, lidar technology for navigation and positioning has higher technical requirements, mainly in terms of accuracy and scanning range. At present, lidar navigation is mainly divided into two technical routes, lidar navigation with reflectors and laser navigation without reflectors (ie SLAM). In laser navigation with reflectors, lidar can obtain more accurate information and achieve more accurate navigation and positioning. However, the accuracy of lidar navigation without reflectors, for example SLAM, can be improved by using algorithms.
The current navigation lidars used in the AGV field are divided into 2D navigation lidars and 3D navigation lidars.
2D AGV and Robot Navigation LiDAR
2D navigation lidar can basically only navigate in real time, and two-dimensional imaging lacks height information and cannot be imaged.
At present, the AGV industry is mainly based on 2D navigation radar, because the general industrial scene environment is relatively fixed and simple, and 2D navigation lidar can fully meet the needs.
2D Indoor AGV and Robot Navigation LiDAR
In Leishen Lidar’s portfolio, both indoor and outdoor use 2D navigation lidar were development. LS01B is designed for indoor AGV and robot anvigation. It is extremely cost effective. But it still give its maximum dection range of 28m to meet most indoor AGVs and robots.

While N series lidar were developed specifically for outdoor applications, thanks to their IP67 Ingress Protection, and high resistance for shock and vibration. N301 is for AGV and robots without assistance of reflectors and N401 is for applications with reflector as it can generate reflectivity data.

3D AGV and Robot Navigation LiDAR
In some special application scenarios or outdoor heavy-duty AGV applications, due to the more complex environment, some manufacturers will also use 3D navigation radar.
3D lidar can perform three-dimensional dynamic real-time imaging, real-time imaging, and can restore the shape and size of objects and restore three-dimensional information in space.
Leishen CX series 3D LiDAR products are specifically developed for 3D Navigation of AGV and robots. They are highly accurate with ±3cm accuracy, and range up to 150m. It’s also durable for outdoor and complex industrial environments.

LiDAR Solutions Robotics and AGV Application
Relying on lidar alone does not mean that the robot can move autonomously. The lidar can continuously scan to obtain the point cloud data in the 2D or 3D dimensional space, but this cannot be directly used by the mobile robot. The SLAM algorithm is needed for map construction and path planning.
LS developed a system based on the 3D SLAM and multi-sensor fusion to achieve autonomous navigation. Our client can also carry out the secondary development based on the system to achieve their own application functions.
Forklifts with LS 3D SLAM system will become AGV with some addition functions added such as pallet & container identification, fork operation control, and intelligent dispatch and monitoring system etc.
